Upcoming Duathlon

By Skip

It has been quite awhile since I have updated my blog so I thought it was about time to let all of you know what I have been up to and what is going on.  First and foremost, I was recently inspired to get writing again due to my niece that recently started running in some 5k races.  In light of that, I will do a few posts in the near future about things like training, nutrition, hydration, etc.

It is also important for me to keep writing is it keeps me accountable for my training and eventually my race times.  If you don’t put in the time, you certainly won’t see the results when it comes to race day.  Most importantly, I will have to answer to my wife if I don’t come home with the hardware!

This year of racing was interrupted due to certain events that happened on earlier this year.  I ended up pulling out of the majority of my races, including the Duathlon Nationals in Arizona last April.  Luckily, I was able to defer my registration to 2013 so that is my plan… if everything else works out.  I have trained most of the year, however and have been able to keep fit, for the most part, while struggling to get back to my race weight.  I should be there soon but it certainly has been a challenge.

In about 3 and a half weeks I have my first multi-race event of the year (can you believe that?) which is the Tradewinds Sprint Duathlon on October 14th.  Training has been pretty intense for this race and it has been very HOT training due to the weather we have had down here in South Florida this summer.  I am hoping the result of that will be lightning fast speeds when it starts to cool down.  The only thing I am worried about is I have been concentrating quite a bit on my bike training that I feel that my running has suffered a little bit due to that.  I have also been doing quite a few longer, slower runs which I think is messing with my short / fast runs.  I must have faith in my training plan and won’t judge anything until after my October 14th race.

I have adjusted my race calender on this website so you can keep track of what I have left this year.   I have some pretty hefty running events the first part of January, which I am really looking forward to… but once again, those are all long distance running and none of the shorter, faster events that I am really good at.

So expect many more blog entries in the near future and if you don’t see anything newly posted, feel free to nudge me!

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
