Variety in your run workouts will make a difference

By Skip

I am scheduling this post to publish while I am at the Dolphins game tonight… hopefully we will be winning or have won by the time you read this.  That will be a good ending to the day versus how it started off.  I have to admit that my post the other day on cramping came back to haunt me and I am going to have to swallow some pride on this one.  Let’s see what I was up against today:

  • WU: Run 10 minutes @ Pace Zone 2 (Low Aerobic)
  • MS: Run 6 minutes @ Pace Zone 6 (Threshold)
    • 6 minutes @ Pace Zone 2
    • 3 minutes @ Pace Zone 8 (VO2max)
    • 3 minutes @ Pace Zone 2
    • 1 minute @ Pace Zone 10 (Speed)
    • 1 minute @ Pace Zone 2
    • 30 seconds at Pace Zone 10 (Speed)
    • 30 seconds @ Pace Zone 2
  • CD: Run 5 minutes @ Pace Zone 2

I need to reschedule this run….. I ended up having major, major stomach cramps which destroyed the workout. I only made it far enough to the item listed in red above…. basically, where the workout REALLY began to get good.  I just could not continue.  After talking about how I would never give into the cramps and I am stronger than that, etc, I have a lot to learn about my body.

For reference purposes, once again I had orange, low-calorie Gatorade before this run which is what must have triggered it. This is the second time I have had problems after drinking this! I was actually really looking forward to the variety of this workout but there was no way I could continue.

I will try again with this routine tomorrow morning and then do my normal recovery run in the evening.  Probably not a good idea to try to “catch-up” but I am far enough away from race day where it should not cause problems.

So if you have read any of the blog thus far you know a little bit about me… I can not be told what to do and I push myself about as far as I can be pushed!

But how did I get here and why? Well, that is what this page is about.

I was never really the athletic type. Sure, I played tennis in high school (and quite well, mind you) but running CERTAINLY was never my thing!

The start of 2009 was big for me as I came to the realization that I had put on too much weight over the past 10 years (read more...)
